US Mass Shooter Found Dead

(Patria) - A man suspected of killing 18 people in a shooting in the city of Lewiston, in the US state of Maine, was found dead after a three-day search, police announced today.

"The suspect in Wednesday evening's shooting has been located and is deceased," the Androscoggin County Sheriff's Office announced on Facebook.

It is unclear where the body of Robert Card, 40, was found. According to CBS News, the BBC's US partner, his body was found near a recycling center.

The suspect's sister-in-law told NBC that the family is "doing everything they can to help the police."

Card is believed to have died by suicide, a law enforcement official said, reports Hina.

Officials told US media that a suicide note was found on property linked to the suspect, which does not state any specific motive for the shooting.

It was addressed to his son. "Our hearts are broken," said Katie Card, who is married to the shooter's brother.
In the search for Army reservist Robert Card, suspected of killing 18 people at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine State Police searched the Androscoggin River yesterday.

Officials had ordered tens of thousands of residents in the area to stay in their homes for their own safety, noting that the manhunt for the mass shooter could last for at least several more days.

Card was a sergeant in a nearby US Army reserve base, and police said he had been temporarily admitted to a mental health facility during the summer.

Among those killed in Lewiston were four deaf residents aged 14 to 76.

According to the non-profit Gun Violence Archive, the number of shootings in which four or more people were shot could reach 679 this year.

In 2022, this number stood at 647. The number of people killed in Wednesday's attack is close to the annual number of homicides in Maine, which has ranged between 16 and 29 since 2012.
