(Patria) - At least eleven people were killed, including a teenager, and several others were injured in a shooting that occurred on Tuesday evening in the central Mexican city of Irapuato, authorities announced, Reuters reported.
The Guanajuato state prosecutor's office, a state affected by violence where Irapuato is located, announced that twenty more people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated earlier on Wednesday that children were among the victims, although the state prosecutor's office later confirmed that only one victim was a minor, aged seventeen.
"It is very regrettable what happened. The investigation is ongoing," Sheinbaum said.
Local media report that the shooting occurred during an evening party celebrating the Catholic holiday, the Nativity of John the Baptist.
A video circulating on social media shows people dancing on the terrace of a residential complex while a band played in the background, before the shooting broke out.
Guanajuato has been one of the most violent regions in the country for many years, where criminal groups fight over drug trafficking routes and commit other crimes. On Tuesday, five people were killed in other parts of the state, according to the prosecutor's office.
