Masked attackers fired at police in Marseille, city under siege

Masked attackers with Kalashnikovs fired at French police in Marseille this morning around 10 AM, agencies report. Police officers were checking the area because the French Prime Minister Manuel Valls was arriving in the city.

There is currently no information about injuries.

More than 7,000 residents of the surrounding area have been asked not to leave their homes until further notice. A hospital has been evacuated, and a school has been closed.

Ironically, the prime minister came on an official visit to Marseille to pay tribute to the local police and authorities for reducing the crime rate in the city, Mirror reports.

An unnamed source states that the duo started shooting at the moment when the head of the Marseille police, Pierre-Marie Bourniquel, arrived at the police station, reports the Parisian portal The Local.
