Mark Rutte becomes NATO Secretary General today

(Patria) - The new NATO Secretary General from today is Mark Rutte, former Prime Minister of the Netherlands.

He will succeed Jens Stoltenberg from Norway, who spent ten years in this position.

Only Dutch diplomat Jozef Luns, who served 13 years in the position, served longer at the helm of NATO than Stoltenberg.

In his speech, Stoltenberg thanked for "the effort and cooperation over the past 10 years" and emphasized that "NATO is now bigger, stronger, and more prepared than ever to face any challenge", and that "NATO's resilience and strength do not depend on individuals but on the collective".

A series of events will be held at NATO headquarters in Brussels today to mark the handover.

Rutte will become the 14th Secretary General in NATO's history.
