Mother of murdered Samir Mišić (16) to unveil memorial at Police Academy grounds on April 5

On Tuesday, April 5, 2016, a memorial to Samir Mišić, a student of the 20th class of the Police School in Vraca who was killed on that day in 1992 at the age of 16, will be unveiled in the grounds of the Police Academy in Vraca, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

The memorial to her son will be unveiled by Samir's mother, Safa Mišić, after which a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Interior and the Novo Sarajevo Municipality will head to the Bare cemetery where Samir is buried.

Samir was one of the first victims of the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina and the siege of Sarajevo.

None of Samir's relatives could arrive from the besieged Rogatica for the funeral at the Sarajevo Bare cemetery. He was lowered into the grave, after being released from captivity, by the director of the Police School, Husein Balić, along with several other professors. Samir Mišić was posthumously awarded the Golden Police Badge.

He only wanted to be a police officer

After finishing the first grade of the Mechanical School in Rogatica, he was admitted to the police school.

According to official records, the attack on the school was ordered by the then Deputy Minister of the Interior of the Republika Srpska, Momčilo Mandić. The attack involved the Special Unit of the MUP of the RS. At that moment, there were about 840 students, professors, course participants in the school... About 400 students were under 18 years old. The attack on the school began shortly after 3:00 PM.

The school director, Husein Balić, refused to surrender. Armed with school weapons used for training, he confronted the Serbian special forces led by Milenko Karišik. Just a few days earlier, Karišik had been Balić's colleague and a professor to the students he was now shooting at.

In the attack on the students, the special forces were supported by Duke Slavko Aleksić with his army, the Serbian population from Vraca, as well as Serbian police officers to whom Radomir Spaić, commander of the Sarajevo Fire Brigade, distributed firefighter uniforms. School director Husein Balić appealed for someone to help him and the students, but could not get assistance. The unfair battle continued non-stop until the early evening hours.

The JNA launched an attack on the students

The commander of the 4th Corps of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), General Vojislav Đurđevac, issued an order to the commander of the 49th JNA Brigade to move with one army battalion towards the school in Vraca, supposedly to prevent conflict.

However, the opposite happened. Members of the 49th JNA Brigade joined the attacks on the police school. The professors were captured and taken to Pale. Before being exchanged, they were tortured for five days.

The students were held captive in the elementary school “Radojka Lakić” near the Police School. Serbian police officers then killed a second-grade student of the 20th class of the Police School, 16-year-old Samir Mišić from Rogatica.
