(Patria) - Moldovan President Maia Sandu announced today that she will run for a second term next year to steer the former Soviet republic towards EU membership.
EU leaders agreed in December to open official accession talks with Moldova and neighbouring Ukraine.
Maia Sandu said this had opened "a new page" for the country of 2.6 million inhabitants bordering Ukraine and Romania – an EU member.
"We still have important steps to take and I promise to continue if you give me your trust for a new mandate in 2024," Sandu posted on her Facebook profile.
She asked parliament to "initiate the organisation of a referendum (on EU membership) next autumn, during which citizens' votes will be decisive".
Maia Sandu (51), a former World Bank economist, is leading in opinion polls for the presidential elections to be held at the end of next year.
A poll conducted earlier this month gave her around 30 percent of favourable opinions compared to 24 percent for pro-Russian former president Igor Dodon. She already defeated him in June 2020.
Moldova's current pro-European government has condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine and claims Moscow is behind plots to overthrow it.
