
(Patria) - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores are traveling to New York on the warship Iwo Jima, US President Donald Trump said in an interview with Fox News.
It is believed they were transported by helicopter from land to the ship.
According to US Attorney General Pam Bondi, both face indictments in New York.
The USS Iwo Jima is an amphibious assault ship of the US Navy, primarily designed to transport Marines and helicopters in the 1960s. It became known for its operations in the Vietnam War and as a recovery ship for Apollo space missions.
Trump says he called on Maduro to surrender.
In the interview with Fox News, Trump further stated that a week ago he called on Maduro to surrender.
- I actually spoke with him myself, but I said, you have to give up. You have to surrender - Trump said.
They spoke by phone about a week ago. However, Maduro refused, he said.
On Saturday morning, Trump confirmed the attack on Venezuela. In the interview with Fox News, Trump said US forces are also ready for a second strike.
According to US Attorney General Bondi, Maduro and his wife are indicted in New York. They are charged with crimes related to drug trafficking, she announced on X.
Specifically, Maduro is charged with "Narcoterrorism conspiracy" and "Cocaine importation conspiracy." He is also charged with possession of machine guns and explosives.
