Hungary closes border with Croatia, barbed wire stretched, water cannons arrive

On Saturday,  about 40 minutes after midnight, around 30 Hungarian soldiers stretched barbed wire across the unofficial border crossing from Croatia to Hungary near Botovo and closed it after the last refugees who arrived by train from Tovarnik that night had crossed, reports the Patria news agency.

At that location, journalists and members of the Hungarian police and army are present, some of whom are in full combat gear.

In the early morning hours, a spokesman for the Hungarian government is expected to hold a press conference for Hungarian journalists. As Hungarian media report, tensions may arise at the border. The border will be guarded by soldiers, as well as water cannons.

The last train with about 1,500 refugees arrived late last night in Botovo; the Hungarians let them through even though it was already past midnight. The last train carried a large number of people with small children, many of whom were visibly exhausted and ill.

At the illegal crossing near Botovo, in addition to the police, numerous volunteers, activists from the Red Cross, UNHCR, firefighters, and medical staff are providing assistance to refugees, reports Index.
