Amnesty International has warned that Hungarian police are separating children from their parents at the Horgos 2 border crossing, reports the Patria News Agency.

Yesterday, numerous refugees attempted to break through the border, after which Hungarian police used tear gas and water cannons. The human rights group stated that Hungarian police officers separated at least nine people, including four children, from their families.

"These families desperately want their children back. These children have not only gone through a traumatic experience traveling to the border and been exposed to police violence, but they have now lost their sense of security because they are not with their parents. The Hungarian authorities must immediately return these children to their families," said Amnesty International's Crisis Response Director Tirana Hassan.

The children were likely taken to a nearby border police building. One father recounted that his child was taken from him while he was holding their hand and has not yet been returned. Amnesty International adds that another man is looking for his two children, and witnesses saw police officers taking away a mother and child, reports Balkans AlJazeera.
