Hungarian police use water cannons and tear gas against refugees, RTS crew beaten

17.35 - About a thousand refugees have again breached the fence. Hungarian police are using tear gas and firing shots, reports an RTS correspondent. Refugees are fleeing in all directions, there are injured, including an RTS journalist who was beaten by Hungarian police.

Hungarian police beat the RTS crew with batons and broke their equipment at Horgos, even though they were told they were journalists from Serbian national television. The journalist, cameraman and sound technician were taken to Subotica where they are receiving medical assistance.

Refugees from the Middle East breached the fence at the Horgos 2 border crossing shortly before 3:00 PM today, trying to enter Hungary, reports the Bosnian news agency Patria.

Hungarian police used water cannons and tear gas to prevent migrants from entering its territory.

Hungary is suspending traffic for 30 days at the Horgos-Reske border crossing, announced the Hungarian Embassy in Belgrade.

Hungary closed its borders at midnight on September 15 after a stricter border law came into effect, which provides for a prison sentence for anyone attempting to cross illegally, and one verdict has already been handed down to a 20-year-old who received a one-year ban on entering Hungary.

Refugees have started arriving in Croatia, although one group is waiting at Horgos and wants to cross into Hungary.

There was plenty of work for emergency teams as well, given the tear gas, and there are many women and children among the refugees.
