(Patria) - Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who had so far opposed the appointment of his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte as NATO Secretary General, finally decided yesterday to support his candidacy after receiving the requested guarantees.
Rutte is the favorite to succeed the Norwegian Jens Stoltenberg as Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, having secured the support of most member states, including the US, reports Hina.
However, Orban had opposed him until now, supporting Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
Mark Rutte confirmed that Hungary, if he gets the position, will not have to participate in NATO activities in Ukraine, and with that in mind, Hungary is ready to support him, Orban announced on platform X.

In addition, he published a letter in which the Dutch official "fully supports" the agreement in this regard reached last week with Stoltenberg during a visit to Budapest.
In that letter, Rutte "took note" of the fact that his past statements on the violation of the rule of law in Hungary had "caused some dissatisfaction" and promised to "treat all allies with equal respect".
Hungary's consent paves the way for Rutte to succeed Stoltenberg, whose term expires on October 1.
