Macron promises to remain in office until the end of his term in May 2027.

(Patria) - French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday that he would "act until May 2027", i.e. until the end of his second term, regardless of who wins the snap parliamentary elections he called, AFP reported.

"The coming government, which will necessarily reflect your vote, I hope will resemble various Republicans who will show the courage to oppose the extremes," Macron added in an open letter published in the French media.

Polls show that the far-right National Rally (RN) will win the elections, the first round of which is scheduled for June 30.

Marine Le Pen, a figure of the party, said that Macron's resignation could be a solution to the parliament's crises in the remaining three years of his term. The president surprised the country by dissolving parliament after the far-right defeated his centrist party in the European Parliament elections earlier this month.

"You can trust me to act as your president until May 2027, at all times a protector of our republic, our values, respecting pluralism and your choices, at your service and that of the nation," Macron stated in the letter. He insisted that the upcoming vote, with the second round on July 7, "are neither presidential elections nor a vote of confidence in the president of the republic," but a response to "one question: who should govern France?"

Opinion polls show that the RN is poised to achieve its best-ever result in a legislative vote, potentially giving it the opportunity to appoint a prime minister, most likely its young party leader Jordan Bardella.

Macron admitted that his decision to call snap elections caused "anger that turned against me" among some voters.

"The goal cannot be to simply continue as things were. I heard that you want change," he added, specifically highlighting his administration's "much stronger and firmer responses" to "insecurity and impunity."
