Macron and Trump discussed political solution for Syria

ISTANBUL, (Patria) - French President Emmanuel Macron and his American counterpart Donald Trump spoke by phone to coordinate positions before the Turkish-Russian-French-German summit on Syria, which will be held on Saturday in Istanbul, the Elysée Palace announced.

The French President presented the goal of the meeting - to consolidate the ceasefire in the Syrian region of Idlib and deepen discussions related to the political process and resolution of the conflict in Syria, according to the statement.

- The US and France share the same security, humanitarian, and political goals in Syria, and the US President asked the President of France to convey this common position during the summit in Istanbul - the statement from the French presidency said.

France has modest expectations from this meeting, but still hopes that progress will be made on the security front and in the political process in Syria, a source from the presidency said, reports the France Press agency.

Paris would like to see an extension of the truce in Idlib and guarantees for the access of humanitarian convoys, at least six of which are currently blocked in Damascus.

Paris also wants progress towards the establishment of a constitutional committee, which would be composed of one-third representatives of the Syrian authorities, one-third representatives of the opposition, and one-third independent representatives.

The summit on Syria will be held on October 27 in Istanbul, bringing together the presidents of Turkey, Russia, and France, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Vladimir Putin, and Emmanuel Macron, as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
