Macron: Europeans must write their own history

(Patria) - French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday called on Europeans to write their own history, not to have it written by others.

- Will Vladimir Putin write our history with his invasions, or America with its elections, or China with its technology? - Macron asked, addressing the summit of the European Political Community in Budapest, which gathered leaders from almost all European countries.

He reiterated his commitment to European autonomy and sovereignty.

- We must take steps to write that history ourselves. This does not mean unconditional Atlanticism, nor abandoning our alliances, nor succumbing to uncontrolled nationalism - Macron said.

He also said that he congratulated Donald Trump on his re-election as US President, but that it is not up to Europeans to say whether his victory is good or bad.

- Trump was elected by Americans and he will defend their interests. That is good and legitimate. The only question for us is to decide whether we will defend the interests of Europeans - Macron said.

He emphasized that Europe - the EU with 440 million people, and greater Europe - the 47 countries of the European Political Community with 700 million - is much stronger than sometimes thought.

- There is no other region in the world with such a large market and such common values. By acting together, we can shape our future, not be mere clients of others - Macron concluded.
