(Patria) - The Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Hungary and Ukraine have initiated technical consultations aimed at resolving disputes in bilateral relations.
This was confirmed today by Prime Minister Peter Magyar and Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Orban.
- With the formation of a government led by the Tisza party, an opportunity has opened to turn a new page in Hungarian-Ukrainian relations - Magyar stated at a press conference during his visit to Warsaw.
His predecessor, Viktor Orban, pursued a pro-Russian policy and maintained a hostile attitude towards Ukraine, which has been fighting against Russian aggression since 2022.
Orban often justified his attacks on Ukraine by claiming it did not respect the rights of the Hungarian minority in that country.
According to Hungarian data, up to 100,000 ethnic Hungarians live in the Zakarpattia region in western Ukraine.
The new Prime Minister Magyar also expects Ukraine to improve their status, including education in the Hungarian language.
- Regulating these rights is a necessary condition for Hungary to agree to the opening of the first chapter in Ukraine's accession negotiations with the European Union - Magyar said in Warsaw.
He added that if a satisfactory agreement is reached, he would be prepared to meet with Zelensky in the Zakarpattia region in early July.
