(Patria) - On the southern slopes of Bjelašnica lies Lukomir, the highest inhabited place in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1,495 m above sea level) and the only one at an altitude above 1,300 m.
People have lived in Lukomir for hundreds of years, as evidenced by the stećak tombstones found there, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Today's inhabitants of the village are descendants of shepherds from Herzegovina, from the area around Stolac, who, due to the rich pastures, kept large flocks of sheep here in the summer, reports Punkufer.
Lukomir is a favorite destination for hikers, reached via trails from Umoljani or by driving from Konjic or Sarajevo, which is about an hour and a half away.
Keep in mind that the road is not suitable for every car. The last part of the road is a winding gravel track, and at the top you will be greeted by a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.
Lukomir is often called the last true Bosnian village, where, regardless of visitors, you can feel the spirit of times past.
With colder weather, the residents of Lukomir move from their homes to more southern regions because access to the village is almost impossible when snow falls, and for this reason, hikers are advised to visit the village in better weather.
This isolated mountain paradise is also special for the authentic appearance of its stone houses with cherry wood shingles, as well as the homemade food prepared from ingredients picked in the garden.
As residents increasingly turn to tourism, there are several places in Lukomir where you can eat well, enjoy pies, hot bread, kaymak, and coffee, as well as stay overnight.
One of the favorite souvenirs that visitors buy in Lukomir are knitted decorations, as well as clothing items like socks.
If you decide to visit Lukomir, the best time to do so is before or after heavy snowfall, usually until December and after March or April.
