Lithuania closes Vilnius airport - fourth incident in airspace this week

(Patria) - NATO member Lithuania closed Vilnius airport and border crossings with Belarus on Sunday after several objects, identified as likely helium balloons, entered its airspace, the National Crisis Management Centre announced, marking the fourth such incident this week, Reuters reported.

Lithuania stated that the balloons are sent by smugglers transporting illegal cigarettes, but also blames Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, for not stopping this practice.

Traffic at the airport in the capital was suspended last night until 11:40 PM, while the border with Belarus will remain closed until the meeting of the Lithuanian National Security Commission on Monday, officials said.

Vilnius airport was also closed on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday this week, as well as on October 5, each time due to balloons entering the capital's airspace, authorities announced.
