G7 leaders discussed a plan to grant selected "trusted partners" access to advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models from US firms such as Anthropic, three diplomatic sources said on Tuesday, potentially paving the way to bypass restrictions on non-US use, Reuters reported.
On Friday, Anthropic disabled access for all users to Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most advanced AI models. The company took this step after US President Donald Trump ordered Anthropic to block foreign nationals from accessing its most advanced AI models, citing national security concerns.
One of the diplomatic sources said that a number of country representatives attending the annual summit of the Group of Seven (G7) wealthy nations discussed the idea of expanding access to advanced AI models with US representatives.
This took place with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, on the sidelines of the opening gala dinner of the G7 summit on Monday in the French resort of Evian-les-Bains on Lake Geneva.
"Trusted partners" could be states or companies, said a second source, who declined to be named because the talks are still ongoing.
An agreement allowing broader access to advanced models would enable G7 countries to use those models to develop stronger cyber-security defenses against rivals such as China.
A White House official stated in a release that the president's team has "an open line of communication with our allies and remains committed to addressing national security concerns regarding Anthropic's model."
Cyber-security experts believe that Anthropic's Mythos, a model designed to find flaws in computer code, could accelerate attacks on banks' technological systems. The European Union is seeking access to Mythos to study the model's implications.
Before Trump's order, Anthropic provided access to Mythos to selected organizations in "more than fifteen countries" so they could use the product to scan their computer systems for vulnerabilities, the company said in a statement.
The organizations included entities from the healthcare, communications, energy, and water supply sectors, the statement said.
