Lebanese Army Shows Ambassadors Efforts in Disarming Hezbollah

(Patria) - The Lebanese army yesterday organized a tour for several ambassadors and foreign military officials with the aim of demonstrating the army's efforts to disarm Hezbollah, as Beirut faces fears of expanded Israeli attacks and growing diplomatic pressure to show results.

Lebanon has committed to disarming Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran, and the army has set a goal to dismantle the group's military infrastructure south of the Litani River, about thirty kilometers north of Israel, by the end of the year, before tackling the rest of the country, AFP reports.

In a statement, the army said it had "organized a field tour for numerous ambassadors, charges d'affaires, and military attachés to familiarize them with the implementation of the first phase of the military plan in the southern Litani sector".

Army Chief Rodolphe Haykal said the tour aimed to highlight the army's commitment to efforts despite its "limited capabilities".
Israel and Hezbollah have been clashing for over a year since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023, and a ceasefire in November 2024 was supposed to end hostilities.

According to the agreement, Hezbollah was supposed to withdraw its forces north of the Litani River and dismantle its military infrastructure in the abandoned area.

Israel was supposed to withdraw its forces and stop attacks, although it has carried out regular attacks in the south and kept troops deployed at five border points it considers strategically important.

Hezbollah has repeatedly rejected calls for disarmament, and many fear a wider Israeli escalation if Beirut fails to fulfill its plans. The ceasefire is monitored by a committee including the United States, France, United Nations peacekeeping forces, Lebanon, and Israel, with a meeting scheduled for December 19.
