Lavrov discussed summit outcome in Alaska with Turkish and Hungarian counterparts

(Patria) - Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke yesterday with his Turkish and Hungarian counterparts, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced, several hours after the summit between the Presidents of the United States of America and Russia failed to reach an agreement on ending the war in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump, who hosted President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday for bilateral talks aimed at ending the war that Russia launched with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, said that Kyiv should reach an agreement with Moscow because "Russia is a very strong power, and they are not," Reuters reported.

The phone call between Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan was held at Turkey's initiative, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on its website.

"The foreign ministers exchanged views on the outcomes of the high-level meeting
between Russia and the US held in Alaska on August 15," the ministry briefly stated.

Turkey has tried to keep diplomatic channels open for both sides during the war, acting as a NATO member, a partner to both Russia and Ukraine, and a potential mediator.

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Lavrov also spoke with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, in which "the parties discussed issues related to the Ukrainian crisis in the context of the outcomes of the Russia-US summit".

Hungary has maintained close ties with Russia during the war, often opposing European Union sanctions and continuing energy cooperation with Moscow, drawing criticism from Kyiv's Western allies. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated on Saturday after the meeting between Putin and Trump that "the world is a safer place than it was yesterday," while other European leaders reiterated in a joint statement that "it will be up to Ukraine to make decisions about its territory."
