Lahore: At least 10 killed in explosion

At least 10 people lost their lives and dozens more were injured in an explosion that occurred in the immediate vicinity of the assembly in the Pakistani city of Lahore, Reuters reports, Patria conveys.

The explosion occurred during protests organized by Pakistani chemists and pharmaceutical manufacturers.

- It is allegedly a suicide attack, but the police investigation, which is still ongoing, will confirm the actual nature of the attack, said local police spokesperson Nayab Haider.

A spokesperson for Jamaat-ur-Ahrar, a group within the Pakistani Taliban, called Reuters and claimed responsibility for the attack.

The same group claimed responsibility for the Easter bombing last year in Lahore, in which more than 70 people lost their lives.

Although the security situation in Pakistan has significantly improved in recent years, Islamist groups such as the Pakistani Taliban and ISIL continue to pose a threat and carry out mass attacks.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif stated that the attacks will not weaken Pakistan's resolve in the fight against militants.

- We are fighting a battle against terrorists among us, and we will continue to fight until we free the people from this cancer, and avenge all those who gave their lives for us, Sharif emphasized in a statement.
