Kurz: We will not allow terrorism to intimidate us

(Patria) - Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz commented on Twitter after the terrorist attack that occurred in Vienna this evening after 8 PM in the city center.

"I am pleased that our police officers have already managed to eliminate the attacker. We will never allow terrorism to intimidate us and we will resolutely fight against such attacks with all means," Kurz wrote.

He thanked EU leaders for expressing support and solidarity with Austria.

President Alexander Van der Bellen said he was "deeply concerned by the alleged terrorist attack in the center of Vienna. Our thoughts and our condolences go out to the victims, the injured, and their families."

Van der Bellen thanked "all police, emergency, and armed forces who are dedicating their lives to protecting our democracy and freedom. Our support goes to the citizens who still have to endure the insecure situation in the city center."

"We will protect our freedom and democracy together and resolutely with all necessary means."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is shocked and saddened by the brutal attack that occurred in Vienna.

"My thoughts are with the families of the victims and the Austrian people. Europe stands in full solidarity with Austria. We are stronger than hatred and terror," Von der Leyen said on Twitter.

Vienna police have so far confirmed that one person died, as well as one attacker. Several people were injured in the attacker's shooting.

The army is also on the streets of Vienna, protecting important facilities and other institutions.
