Guilty of murder and rape: Šekarić's sentence increased to 17 years

The Appellate Panel of the Court of BiH increased the sentence for Dragan Šekarić, sentencing him to 17 years in prison for crimes against humanity committed in 1992 in Višegrad, reports the news agency Patria.

The Appellate Panel partially granted the appeal of the BiH Prosecutor's Office and increased Šekarić's sentence from 14 to 17 years in prison. The first-instance verdict, by which he was found guilty of murder and rape in Višegrad, was confirmed in the remaining part.

In February of last year, Šekarić was found guilty of taking several civilians out of a house in the Kosovo Polje settlement in Višegrad in early June 1992, and then raping protected witness S-1 in the house.

According to the verdict, on the same day, he pushed Fatima Jamak into one of the houses, which was set on fire, and then shot her.

Šekarić was acquitted of three counts of the indictment – for participating in the attack on Kokino Selo (Goražde municipality), the robbery and abduction of Džemail Zukić and his son, who were never found again, and the mistreatment of one person in the Uzamnica camp. There is no possibility of appeal against the verdict of the Appellate Panel, writes Birn.
