Far-right calls on Poland to be ready to leave the European Union

(Patria) - Tens of thousands of far-right supporters chanted anti-European Union slogans on Saturday at a rally on Independence Day, AFP reported.

The annual event in Warsaw attracted 40,000 people, according to local authorities, while media estimate 90,000 turned out, less than a month after the pro-EU opposition won the parliamentary elections.

Banners and posters called for "Polexit" after the British Brexit from the EU in January 2020.

"If there are new changes to the European treaties, Poland must be ready to leave the European Union," said the leader of All-Polish Youth, Marcin Kowalski. Future treaty changes will transform the bloc into a "Euro-federalist collective" led by the European Commission, Kowalski said.

The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, which supported the rally in previous years, organized its own independence celebration this year ahead of the official date.

The conservative PiS is trying to form a new government after failing to win a parliamentary majority in the October 15 elections, with little hope of finding a coalition partner.

The liberal Civic Coalition bloc of opposition leader Donald Tusk came in second, but together with two smaller parties, the centrist Third Way and the Left, secured a majority of 248 seats in the 460-seat parliament, which is expected to start work on Monday.
