(Patria) – A Taliban delegation of 31 members has arrived in Qatar with the aim of signing a peace agreement with the United States – a move that should lead the parties towards the end of the 18-year-long war.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will attend the ceremony by order of the US President.
Ahead of the agreement signing, the Taliban ordered all their fighters to 'refrain from any attacks... for the peace and happiness of the nation'.
Immediately after the agreement is signed, the US side will begin withdrawing about 8,600 soldiers out of a total of 13,000, while further withdrawal depends on the Taliban side, which is expected to fulfill conditions regarding anti-terrorist activities.
President Trump called the move 'a significant step towards lasting peace in a new Afghanistan, free from al-Qaeda, ISIL, and other terrorist groups'.
The agreement signing ceremony will be held in the capital, Doha.
