Svetozar Marović, a close associate of Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Đukanović and former President of Serbia and Montenegro, has been sentenced to three years and ten months in prison for corruption, judicial authorities reported on Tuesday, reports the Patria News Agency.
Marović (61) will also have to pay 1.1 million euros in damages and donate 100,000 euros for humanitarian purposes, the court in Podgorica reported, explaining that the "defendant pleaded guilty".
He was arrested in December last year under a provision of the state prosecutor.
Marović admitted to using his political powers to facilitate the purchase of land in Budva, the jewel of Montenegrin tourism, through his son Miloš's company.
Svetozar Marović announced on Tuesday that he had resigned from the position of director of the political council of the Social Democratic Party, led by Prime Minister Milo Đukanović, which is in power.
Marović was long considered the main ideologue of Đukanović's party. From 2003 to 2006, he was the President of Serbia and Montenegro.
