(Patria) - During the passage of a convoy with foreign diplomats who were visiting northwestern Pakistan, including members of the diplomatic staff from BiH, a bomb detonated on the road on Sunday, killing a police officer, a member of the security detail, the police announced.
Swat district police official Zahidullah Khan stated that the diplomats were visiting the Swat Valley at the invitation of the local chamber of commerce.
"The team leading the convoy was hit by a roadside bomb," he said.
Khan added that four other police officers were injured.
All diplomats, about ten of them, are safe and are returning to Islamabad, police confirmed.
"None of the ambassadors were injured in the attack and they were moved to a safe place before they headed towards Islamabad," Deputy Inspector General of Police Mohammad Ali Gandapur told Reuters.
Reporters for Radio Free Europe (RSE) from Pakistan report that this happened today, September 22. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH has no information yet, the ministry said.
The convoy included 12 diplomats from BiH, Russia, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Portugal.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Pakistani counter-terrorism forces maintain a large number of their personnel in the Swat Valley, which has long been a hotbed of Islamist insurgency.
Militants have intensified their attacks since the end of 2022 after breaking a ceasefire with the government.
Islamist militants shot and wounded Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai in the valley in 2012.
