Congress Votes to Impeach Trump, Senate to Decide with Two-Thirds Majority

SARAJEVO, (Patria) - The US House of Representatives voted to impeach Donald Trump tonight.

The vote is still ongoing. 231 representatives voted for impeachment. Although the vote is still ongoing, and there is a theoretical possibility that representatives might change their minds, world media have already reported the news of the impeachment.

221 Democrats and as many as 10 Republicans voted for impeachment, Index.hr reports.

However, Trump is still president, and the Democrats now face a tougher task. The process now moves to the Senate, the upper house of Congress. According to the Constitution, a two-thirds majority of senators is required to convict and remove the president.

Second Impeachment

This is the second time impeachment proceedings have been initiated against Trump.

The House of Representatives, where Democrats hold a majority, attempted to remove Trump in December 2019 on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress's investigation into Trump's pressure on Ukraine to investigate then-election rival Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

The impeachment passed the House of Representatives at that time as well. 230 representatives voted for impeachment - Democrats voted with 229 votes in favor, and one independent representative joined them. No Republican voted for Trump's impeachment at that time. 197 representatives voted against impeachment - all Republicans, along with two other Democrats.

However, the Republican-controlled Senate acquitted Trump in February 2020.

We remind you that the second impeachment attempt was initiated after the riot and the storming of the Capitol by Trump's supporters during the vote to confirm Biden's election.

Five people died in clashes between supporters and police.
