Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction: Recommendations for Fire Protection

The Ministry of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in cooperation with the UN in Sarajevo, is organizing on Wednesday, 02.12.2015, the third conference of the Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the topic „Fires“.

At the conference, through expert discussions, there will be talks about fires in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which are marked in the risk matrix as having a very high probability. Also, discussions will be held on the problems and challenges faced by those responsible for the structure of fire protection and rescue.

The conference will be opened by the Minister of Security of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dragan Mektić, and Ayman Ebulaban, the UNICEF Resident Representative in BiH, as the UN representative.

The conference will be attended by representatives of competent institutions and bodies from Bosnia and Herzegovina in the field of fire protection, experts, representatives of international institutions and organizations, embassies, and the private sector. At the end of the conference, recommendations for fire protection will be adopted.

In 2013, Bosnia and Herzegovina established the Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction as a forum for the exchange of opinions, encompassing all factors of society from different fields of activity that will offer the best solutions in their domain for the purpose of prevention and better protection against disasters.

This includes harmonizing views on the needs for action in disaster risk reduction, assessing hazards, coordinating activities, encouraging and achieving the highest quality response to threats and risks of disasters, and developing public awareness of the existence of dangers from natural or other disasters.

The holding of the Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction forum arose from the obligation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as a member of the United Nations, to act in accordance with the conclusions of the „World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction“ of the UN, held in January 2005 in Kobe, Japan.

The conference of the Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction of Bosnia and Herzegovina will be organized as a forum for the exchange of opinions every subsequent year. The Embassy of Switzerland in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the donor for holding the conference.
