Konaković received Soreca and Makovec: EU membership remains a strategic goal

(Patria) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Elmedin Konaković met on December 10, 2025, with the Head of Cabinet of the European Commission's Commissioner for Enlargement Marko Makovec and the Head of the European Union Delegation to BiH and EU Special Representative Luigi Soreca.

During the talks, key challenges and priorities on Bosnia and Herzegovina's European path were discussed. Special emphasis was placed on the development of relations between BiH and the European Union, the stabilization and association process, as well as the reform processes necessary for the country to advance towards EU membership.

Minister Konaković emphasized that membership in the European Union remains a strategic goal and the highest priority of Bosnia and Herzegovina's foreign policy, despite internal obstructions and rhetoric that threaten the Dayton Peace Agreement and the constitutional order. He particularly pointed out the necessity of adopting key laws in accordance with European standards, and appointing a chief negotiator in the European integration process. He stressed the importance of maintaining the functionality of institutions, respecting the Dayton Peace Agreement, and ensuring the stability, democratic governance, and sovereignty of the state.

The interlocutors agreed that overcoming internal obstructions and strengthening institutional stability are key prerequisites for continuing the reform process and opening accession negotiations with the EU. They reiterated the European Union's readiness to continue providing support to Bosnia and Herzegovina in strengthening institutions, the rule of law, and implementing reforms that are crucial for the country's European path. It was emphasized that opportunities for progress are not unlimited, and the importance of focusing on the remaining steps was highlighted, primarily the adoption of the Law on the High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council and the Law on Courts, as well as the appointment of a chief negotiator and a negotiation team, which will pave the way for the start of accession negotiations with the European Union.
