FINALLY UNDERSTOOD Kallas: Trump administration dislikes the EU

(Patria) - European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas stated on Sunday that the administration of US President Donald Trump dislikes a united European Union because it is a geopolitical force that Washington must reckon with, reports Fena.

Speaking at the Lennart Meri Conference in Tallinn, Kallas warned EU member states against weakening the bloc by entering into bilateral agreements with the United States.

"They do not like the European Union, that is very clear. But we must understand why, why the US, China, Russia... dislike it.

Because if we stick together, then we are an equal force, we are strong," she said.

She added that it is easier to negotiate individually with countries than with a bloc that, as she put it, can act as an equal partner, writes Politico.

"I am concerned because I sometimes see countries going down that path. Division actually works," Kallas warned.

Several EU member states have tried to maintain their own communication channels with Washington since Trump returned to the White House, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, but the strategy failed after Trump's criticism of Pope Leo XIV.

Kallas called on member states to defend the EU and to conclude agreements through the bloc.

"Why do these powers want to break up the EU? Because we are much stronger when we are together," she said.

Speaking about China, Kallas said that Europe has a clear diagnosis of the disease, but not an agreement on the cure.

"We can continue with morphine, i.e. industrial subsidies, or start chemotherapy, i.e. using EU tools such as foreign investment control, public procurement, and raw material diversification.

It will be painful because there will be retaliation," she said, adding that rich countries will not be able to subsidize industry indefinitely.
