(Patria) - Colombia will continue to cooperate with the US in the fight against drug trafficking, using American intelligence data and technology, the government of the South American country announced.

- The Colombian government has informed the US government that we will continue to coordinate and cooperate in the fight against drug trafficking - said Colombian Minister of the Interior Armando Benedetti in a video address provided to journalists by the government, which also included Minister of Justice Andres Idarraga.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday called Colombian President Gustavo Petro "sick" and said a possible US military operation in Colombia was possible.

Over the weekend, US forces entered Venezuela and captured President Nicolas Maduro, who pleaded not guilty to charges of narco-terrorism in a New York court yesterday.

Benedetti said that Colombian anti-drug operations will target drug production laboratories, criminal organizations, and their camps.

- We will continue to emphasize the fight against this scourge, especially on the Colombian-Venezuelan border - Idarraga said.

The Colombian government criticized Trump's Sunday statements and said that any possible US military incursion would represent an "unjustified interference".

Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that there is a "golden opportunity" to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

The United States has been increasing pressure on Colombia in recent years to intensify the fight against drug production, after an increase in the cultivation of coca leaf, the raw material for cocaine production.

Petro's government claims to have seized record amounts of cocaine, including almost 1,000 metric tons, or one million kilograms, during 2025.
