(Patria) - Spanish police seized almost a ton of cocaine from the 'Balkan Cartel' in the port of Algeciras, Spanish authorities announced.
Police stated that the drugs were hidden in shipping containers that arrived from South America, Hina reports.
It is added that Spanish security structures had information that a group called the 'Balkan Cartel', composed of criminals from the former Yugoslavia, was bringing drugs to the port of Algeciras.
Upon the arrival of a suspicious ship in Andalusia, police in Algeciras searched the cargo it was carrying and found 415 kilograms of cocaine. Subsequently, another 500 kilograms of drugs were found in a second shipment of containers that arrived in this southern city.
'The Balkan Cartel is currently the most active at the European level,' the Spanish police statement said.
It is stated that South American drug cartels send cocaine to Spanish ports to this group, hidden among legal goods in shipping containers.
'Difficulties in investigations related to the members of these organizations lie in their mobility. They are capable of traveling thousands of kilometers to hold a meeting,' the Spanish police announced.
It was announced that the investigation is ongoing with the aim of arresting members of this smuggling network.
