China uneasy about 'foreigners': People of African origin banned from entering one Chinese city

(Patria) – China's National Health Commission reported 46 new cases of infection, 4 more than the previous day.

Also, 34 asymptomatic cases were located, which is fewer than 47 a day earlier.

According to official data from Chinese authorities, the total number of confirmed infections now stands at 81,539, with a total death toll of 3,339, 3 more than in previous days.

Compared to February when the infection took hold, China has managed to contain the epidemic thanks to strict measures and public discipline. However, the government fears a second wave of infection that could, it is said, be triggered by arrivals from other countries and asymptomatic carriers of the virus.

The northeastern province of Heilongjiang reported a sharp increase in new cases, mostly due to arrivals from neighboring Russia, which is also facing a growing epidemic.

On Friday, 22 new cases of infection were recorded, involving Chinese citizens who came from Russia, and one new case in the city of Harbin.

The central province of Hubei, where the virus first appeared, has had no new infections for seven days.

The rise in new infections has led to increased caution towards foreigners in the city of Guangzhou, with hospitality workers ordered not to serve guests of African origin, according to the US consulate in that city.

This also applies to anyone with 'African contacts' who must immediately undergo testing and quarantine, regardless of whether they have traveled.

City authorities have ordered African Americans, as well as anyone who has been in contact with people of African origin, to avoid this city, reports Reuters. This is at the very least an inappropriate measure given that African countries are currently the least affected compared to other continents.
