Chinese Navy Has the Most Warships in the World

(Patria) - The Chinese Navy currently has 234 warships, while the US Navy has 219. Although US ships are larger and heavier due to aircraft carriers, they lose in total numbers.

In the period from 2019 to 2023, China's four largest shipyards - Dalian, Guangzhou, Jiangnan, and Hudong-Zhonghua - built 39 warships with a total displacement (the amount of water an object displaces, a common way to measure the size of a ship or fleet) of 550,000 tons.

For comparison, the British Navy has a displacement of around 399,000 tons.

China today has the largest navy by number of ships, and its shipbuilding capacity allows for rapid production of new vessels.

More than 60 percent of global ship orders this year went to Chinese shipyards.

The concept of "military-civil fusion" allows for the rapid redirection of resources between civilian and military shipyards, giving Beijing an additional advantage in crisis situations.

With the largest number of ships in the world and strong shipbuilding capacity, the Chinese Navy can now deploy forces faster and on a larger scale than ever before, giving it an advantage in potential conflicts, especially in the South China Sea and around Taiwan.

- There are no signs that the Chinese are slowing down. The number of ships is not the only measure of a navy's effectiveness, but the ability to produce warships could make a strategic difference - analyst Alexander Palmer from CSIS told the BBC.

However, limitations still exist. China has only two operational aircraft carriers, significantly fewer submarines, and its ships are not as technologically advanced as American ones.

Chinese submarines are mostly adapted for the shallower South China Sea. The Chinese Navy's ability to operate far from shore is limited, but its capacity for rapid construction of warships and fleet modernization is closing the gap with US forces.

Satellite imagery obtained by the BBC reveals the expansion of naval bases, including new infrastructure for Jin-class submarines, each capable of carrying 12 nuclear missiles.
