China calls on Washington not to recognize Taiwan

(Patria) - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan that official Washington should remain committed to not supporting Taiwan's independence.

The head of Chinese diplomacy said yesterday that the presidential and parliamentary elections in Taiwan, held on January 13, "have not changed the fact that this island is an integral part of China," and that the biggest challenge in Sino-American relations is the issue of "Taiwan's independence".

Yesterday's White House statement stated that Sullivan conveyed to the other side the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region, reports RSE.

Sullivan pointed out that, although Washington and Beijing are in global competition, both sides must "prevent it from escalating into conflict or confrontation".

Wang Yi emphasized that both sides should use the upcoming 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations as an opportunity to reflect on past experiences and treat each other as equals, "instead of adopting a condescending attitude."

- Both sides should be committed to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, building the right way for China and the US to interact - Yi added.

Wang and Sullivan met in Bangkok, and both governments welcomed their talks as "candid, substantive, and constructive".

Beijing announced that both sides agreed that the two presidents would maintain regular contact, provide strategic guidance on bilateral relations, and promote exchanges between the US and China in various fields and at different levels.

It was announced that China and the US will establish a joint working group on cooperation in combating drug trafficking in the near future and will hold the first China-US dialogue on artificial intelligence in the spring.

Washington announced that, in addition to the issue of Taiwan, the two officials discussed Russia's war against Ukraine, the Middle East, North Korea, the South China Sea, and Myanmar.

Taiwan's sovereignty is recognized by 13 countries in the world, Taiwanese officials do not accept China's sovereignty, while the US pursues a policy of so-called strategic ambiguity on the Taiwan issue.

Washington supports Taiwan's security by sending military equipment but has adhered to the "one China" policy since 1979, meaning it does not recognize Taiwan as a state and considers the Chinese government legitimate in international relations.
