(Patria) - US President Joe Biden and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani discussed on Tuesday the need to release hostages held in Gaza and efforts to increase humanitarian aid, the White House announced, Reuters reports.
Qatar and Egypt mediated between Israel and Hamas during a ceasefire in late November. Current diplomatic efforts for a new ceasefire have yielded little progress so far.
"The two leaders discussed urgent efforts to secure the release of all remaining hostages held by Hamas, including American citizens," the White House statement said, adding that they also discussed increasing access to humanitarian aid.
The Qatar News Agency reported that the Emir received a phone call from Biden to discuss the latest developments and current joint mediation efforts to de-escalate the situation in the besieged enclave and achieve a lasting ceasefire.
