Karadžić verdict in December

The Hague Tribunal plans to deliver its verdict for Radovan Karadžić, former President of the Republika Srpska (RS) charged with genocide and other crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in December, BIRN reported, as carried by the Patria news agency.

The verdict was previously announced for October.

Karadžić is charged with genocide in Srebrenica committed in 1995 and in several other municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1992, as well as with the persecution of Bosniak and Croat populations, terrorising the citizens of Sarajevo, and taking UNPROFOR members hostage.

Karadžić was arrested on this day seven years ago in Serbia, where he lived under the name Dragan Dabić.

His trial began in October 2009, and the Prosecution started presenting evidence six months later and concluded this process in May 2012.

Karadžić, who is defending himself, called his witnesses from October 2012 until May last year.

In closing arguments held in the autumn, the Prosecution sought a life sentence for the former RS President, who in his final address to the Trial Chamber expressed confidence that he would be acquitted.

The verdict will be delivered by a chamber presided over by South Korean judge O-Gon Kwon, whose members are Howard Morrison and Melville Baird.
