Candidate for UN Secretary-General and former Slovenian President Danilo Tirk said that with the verdict against Radovan Karadžić the international community sent a clear message that crimes, such as genocide, cannot go unpunished, Patria reports.
The verdict against Karadžić is of historical significance for Tirk. Finally, he said, the verdict unequivocally demonstrated the depth of the most serious crimes committed on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the conflict.
- Impunity is no longer acceptable – Tirk stated in an interview with the Patria agency.
- The court decision (against Karadžić) showed that justice can be achieved, in a criminal legal sense. Naturally, the verdict is important for Bosnia and Herzegovina and the entire region, especially for the families of the victims, but this verdict is also extremely important for the world. I would like this to be an occasion for catharsis for all those who in some way witnessed everything that happened in Bosnia and Herzegovina 20 years ago – he added.
Tirk recalled that the Srebrenica genocide is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest crimes that occurred after World War II, so it is no surprise that the Karadžić verdict was one of the main topics today even in Washington, Patria reports.
