(Patria) - German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he hopes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will be included in the Russia-United States summit, Reuters reported.
Merz said in an interview with public broadcaster ARD that he will have a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump.
"We are intensively preparing at the European level together with the US government for this meeting," he said.
"And we hope and assume that the Ukrainian government and President Zelenskyy will be included in this meeting."
Zelenskyy received diplomatic support from Europe and NATO on Sunday ahead of the Russia-US summit this week, and Kyiv fears that Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump might try to dictate terms for ending the three-year war.
"We cannot accept that territorial issues are resolved between Russia and America over the heads of Europeans and Ukrainians," Merz said.
He added that there can be no peace that rewards Russia's aggressive actions and possibly encourages further actions.
