Canadian Prime Minister to meet Trump next week to discuss tariffs

(Patria) - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to meet with US President Donald Trump at the White House next week.

We will discuss tariffs and bilateral relations, Carney announced yesterday at his first press conference since taking office after his Liberals' election victory.

"It is important to engage immediately, which has always been my intention, and his intention," Carney said.

In Monday's election, the Liberals secured a fourth consecutive government, a rarity in Canadian politics.

"President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. This will never, ever happen," Carney said in his victory speech.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada and turn it into the 51st US state. Additionally, he imposed high tariffs on the neighboring country, whose economy is closely linked to the American one.

Carney, a former central bank governor, has gained momentum in recent weeks thanks to Canadian voters' antipathy towards Trump.

The Conservatives ran their campaign on a platform of tax cuts and government spending, but the populist approach of their leader, Pierre Poilievre, and Trump-style rhetoric did not appeal to some voters amid heightened tensions with Washington.
