Canadian Prime Minister Carney and Brazilian President Lula call for a peaceful Venezuelan-led transition process

(Patria) - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Thursday about the situation in Venezuela, and the two countries confirmed their support for a "peaceful, negotiated, and Venezuelan-led transition process," Reuters reported.

The U.S. military abducted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife over the weekend in Venezuela and brought them to New York.

"They confirmed their support for a peaceful, negotiated, and Venezuelan transition process that respects the democratic will of the Venezuelan people," said Prime Minister Carney's office regarding his conversation with Lula.

"The leaders emphasized the need for all parties to respect international law and the principle of sovereignty."

The United Nations Human Rights Office stated that the U.S. intervention in Venezuela is a violation of international law that has made the world less safe.

Trump said in an interview published Thursday by The New York Times that the United States could monitor Venezuela for years and control its oil revenues.

Trump decided to support Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, instead of Venezuelan opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado.

Carney spoke with the Venezuelan opposition leader on Sunday, and his office stated that he thanked her "for her decisive voice on behalf of the Venezuelan people."

Canada has criticized Maduro's government for alleged human rights violations in Venezuela, and Carney called his removal from power "welcome news," but Ottawa did not directly praise the U.S. military action in the South American nation.
Carney also called on the parties to respect international law.

Lula condemned Washington's actions as crossing an "unacceptable line."
