Canada introduces 100% tariffs on electric vehicles from China

(Patria) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the introduction of 100% tariffs on the import of electric vehicles from China.

According to the French news agency AFP, authorities want to curb the flood of state-subsidized electric vehicles from China into the North American market with the same tariffs that apply in the US.

Trudeau accused China, one of the world's largest exporters of electric vehicles, of not playing by the same rules as other countries in areas such as environmental and labor standards.

The Canadian Prime Minister also announced additional tariffs on the import of Chinese steel and aluminum products.

According to AFP, the Canadian auto industry employs more than 125,000 people, and Ottawa has invested billions of dollars to support the transition to electric vehicles and increase domestic supply of electric batteries.

Trudeau said that China's overproduction of electric vehicles and the large subsidies China provides to the automotive sector require action.

"If we don't want to be left behind in this race, we have to stand up, and that's exactly what we're doing," Trudeau stated.

In recent months, the US and the EU have already introduced tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, at 100% and 38% respectively.
