Kamala Harris: US will not allow forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza or West Bank

(Patria) - US Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday outlined American goals for when the Israel-Hamas conflict ends and stressed that the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank should finally be united under a single governing entity, Reuters reported.

Harris spoke at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, after US President Joe Biden asked her to take a seat at the table while he focuses on the Israel-Hamas war.

In talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Harris said that "the United States will under no circumstances allow the forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza or the West Bank, the siege of Gaza, or the redrawing of Gaza's borders," according to the White House.

She also said that when the war ends, reconstruction efforts should continue "in the context of a clear political horizon for the Palestinian people towards their own state led by a revitalized Palestinian Authority and which will have significant support from the international community and countries in the region," the statement said.

"The Vice President made clear that Hamas cannot control Gaza, which is unsustainable for Israel's security, the well-being of the Palestinian people, and regional security," it added.

Harris also met with Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and spoke with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who was key in negotiations for the release of hostages from Gaza.

In a statement later on Saturday, Harris expressed the US desire to restore a pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas in order to extract more hostages from Gaza and to restore a steady flow of humanitarian aid.
