What the city with the most snow in the world looks like

(Patria) - Aomori in Japan is considered the place with the most snowfall in the world.

According to some statistics, the capital of Aomori Prefecture on Japan's largest island, Honshu, receives an average of 7.9 meters of snow each year.

Much of the city and surrounding areas are covered by a thick layer of snow from November to April each year.

Sidewalks are blocked by high walls of snow and ice that grow taller as snowplows clear the roads, reports Punkufer.hr.

The abundant snow is a result of Aomori's unique geographical location between the Hakkoda Mountains and the shores of Mutsu Bay.

Icy Siberian winds reach it, colliding in the area and causing rapid cloud formation. Due to the low temperatures in the city - it snows instead of rains.

So much snow falls during the winter that daily shoveling is an unavoidable sight among Aomori's 300,000 inhabitants.

Snowdrifts can be so high that they block people from leaving their homes. The most snow falls in the last week of December. On average, it snows six out of seven days then, with 47 centimeters of snow.

Despite the constant snowstorms, Aomori does not close its doors to travelers. Many come here in winter to enjoy skiing and other snow-related activities, as well as local specialties - mostly dishes based on fresh fish and seafood.

It is not difficult to get to Aomori even when it is snowing - by plane or train. From Tokyo, you can reach Aomori in three hours by Japanese super-fast train.
