When Barack Obama took office from G. W. Bush, euphoria spread among many. The man even received the Nobel Prize before proving he deserved it. Obama received the award in the same year he took office for "strengthening international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." We truly did not experience that cooperation, because during his term, and after the great world economic crisis of 2008-2009, American interest in Bosnia and Herzegovina began to continuously and progressively decline, which gave local scoundrels room to rise and launch an aggressive trilateral assault on Bosnia.
What we remember from that period is the fact that during B. Obama's term (2009-2016), local B. (Izetbegović) was elected a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina twice in this swamp of ours (in 2010 and 2014). And Haris was already gone. Essentially, B. Obama followed his predecessor's foreign policy with surprising consistency. His policy in the Balkans (the so-called Western Balkans) was quite pale and lacked real focus. We cannot recall anything special, except that his 'vice president' was our dear Joe Biden.
Now that J. Biden has taken office from Donald Trump, 'euphoria has spread among many.' He did not receive the Nobel Prize, nor will he, such a mistake is not often repeated.
It is still fair to give him a chance to earn that award. Joe Biden is important to half of Bosnia because he called the events in Bosnia by their true name. And on that, half of Bosnia builds hope. When Lemkin coined the word genocide in 1944 and when the UN Genocide Convention defined the term genocide in 1948, no one spoke of the number of victims or their gender. Paraphrasing, it can be said that the aforementioned defined genocide as a clearly planned intention and action to destroy a people, in whole or in part.
Biden, knowing this, and contemplating life from the position of a victim, called the events by the name and term defined by relevant court rulings of international courts. The question is whether that is enough for hope and euphoria for half of Bosnia? Even if it is enough, what about the other half of Bosnia?
We have already emphasized the main problems of the future in an earlier column (disruptive technologies, climate change, the continuous nuclear threat). The fact is that the fundamental problems of the future today can only be global, never local. Those who remain only at the local level of quarrels and fights will not be an area of interest for anyone, not even for our dear J. Biden.
Our destiny is in our own hands.
If we do not understand that we must replace our local focus on 'peasant boundaries' with the fastest possible incorporation into the general currents of history, then our expectations from Biden and others will not be met. Because Joe Biden inherited Trump's legacy, he is in the middle of a chess game and many of his future moves are already determined by the moves of his predecessor. He can help the little country of Bosnia become a state, capable of the future, only if the paradigm of governance in this country changes with a change that starts from within.
The first change should be political transformation and strengthening of state institutions. This transformation must be initiated by that half of Bosnia that has hope in J. Biden, and the first step of this transformation is the abolition of our Sarajevo quasi-institution with metastatic progression, called 'Braco i Seka.' Laktaši will then become a suburb of Banja Luka, not its center, while Radobolja will return to its original course. Of course, all after hard work and painful effort, and with the help of J. Biden.
The three-headed monster, which breathes with one lung and shits common and coordinated lies, will begin to crumble only when true political transformation begins from the center of Bosnia and when we realize that we have very little time left to catch the currents of the new history being born. Anachronistic politics no longer has a place, not even in Bosnia.
