Eleven people lost their lives in a shooting that occurred at a birthday celebration in the state of Guerrero, southern Mexico, the governor of that state announced, as reported by the Patria news agency.
"We do not know exactly what happened at that fifteenth birthday celebration, but, according to the information available to us, eleven people were killed," Guerrero Governor Hector Astudillo told the media.
The incident took place on Friday evening at a celebration known as a "quinceanera," which marks a girl's 15th birthday in Latin America, considered a transition from childhood to young womanhood, in the village of Cundancitu, in the municipality of Coyuca de Catalan.
On Saturday, "those who tried to reach the scene were met with gunfire," Astudillo added, without providing further details about the event. An investigation has been launched, Index reports.
