Japan will not retaliate against US tariffs

(Patria) - Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated that he plans a phone call with the US President, after Donald Trump announced the introduction of tariffs of 24% on Japanese imports into the US.

Speaking to Yomiuri TV, Ishiba emphasized that Japan does not intend to respond with countermeasures, signaling a cautious approach in resolving this trade dispute.

During his term, Trump often used tariffs as a tool for conducting trade policy, with the aim of reducing the US trade deficit and protecting domestic industry.

These measures were part of his broader "America First" strategy.

The Trump administration imposed tariffs on products from several countries and unions, including China, the European Union, and Mexico, which caused global trade tensions.

In Japan's case, import tariffs could affect key sectors such as the automotive industry, which accounts for a significant portion of Japanese exports to the US.

However, Japan traditionally avoids escalating trade conflicts and often prefers diplomatic dialogue to protect its economic interests.

Ishiba's statement about the absence of countermeasures reflects this strategy.

Let us recall that the US President on Wednesday declared "Liberation Day" and announced the introduction of high tariffs on imports into the US, including 25% on cars and 10% on all products, with the aim of protecting American industry and reducing the trade deficit.
