Japan to Sanction Chinese Firms Aiding Russia's War Efforts in Ukraine

(Patria) - Japan is considering imposing sanctions on companies, including Chinese ones, that support Russia's war against Ukraine by supplying materials that can be used by the military, public broadcaster NHK reported this morning.

The report specifically mentioned that possible sanctions could be directed at "groups suspected of providing material assistance, including domestic Chinese companies," and that they would be banned from exporting from Japan, Reuters reported.

Preparations are underway for Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to announce the sanctions at the G7 summit scheduled for later this week, if the plans are finalized, NHK stated.

US officials have said that China is supporting Russia's war efforts in Ukraine by helping Moscow in its largest military buildup since the Soviet era, providing drone and missile technology.

The US imposed sanctions in May on twenty companies based in China and Hong Kong, and G7 leaders could warn smaller Chinese banks for helping Russia evade Western sanctions.
