Yanukovych sentenced to 13 years in prison, found guilty of treason against Ukraine

(Patria) - A court in Kyiv has sentenced former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to 13 years in prison in absentia after previously finding him guilty of treason.

In delivering the verdict, the judge concluded that there is insufficient evidence that Yanukovych is guilty on the charge related to attempting to alter the country's borders.

At the same time, the court concluded that Yanukovych is guilty of high treason and complicity in waging an aggressive war, the TASS news agency reported.

Yanukovych was tried on multiple charges in absentia, as he is in Russia.

Yanukovych fled Ukraine in 2014 when tensions escalated in Kyiv following the violent crackdown on protests, in which demonstrators demanded that Yanukovych honor agreements with the European Union.
